Why do people from other countries have better English grammar than teenagers here?

My friend in the USA is of Columbian origins and she puts our kids to shame. She speaks Spanish and English and her grammar is perfect. Education in England is so pathetic. x

Best Answer:

Maybe because the teenagers form your country have dialect from there and use the slang that is used there. The friend you are talking about learned correct english. She was not taught slang words or meanings from that country that`s why it`s perfect. She basically doesn` t know a "wrong" way to talk.

Because typing for teenagers is the same as texting. It's just sad really.

because foreigners go to ESL classes where they learn grammar and in our schools, we don't learn grammar or any english at all.

because theyre more interested in learning english more than teenagers who have lived in the us for years.

People in other countries have better english grammar than teenagers here because in other countries they learn how to speak english, the proper way to speak it but here we dont get english grammar lessons so we speak english watever way we want to.

If your Columbian friend learned English in Columbia then he learned the corect way it should be spoke. Just as An English student in England would learn Spanish the correct way, but if traveling to a dominately spainsh speaking country would realize the population didn't speak the language perfectly. We take the dialect those around us use. Just like the difference in English from The North and South in the U.S.

People are lazy! Bad grammar drives me nuts, I swear I'm allergic to it. Then again, I'm a literature major so that's not too shocking.

It's a generalisation but there is some truth in it. It's because when you learn a foreign language you have to learn the grammar. You'll find that most native speakers of a language don't know the grammar of their own language very well. I know German grammar better than many Germans because I spent years and years studying it.

Because they are taught grammatical English abroad ,kids here are too lazy to keep up with a grammar that is not taught very well in British schools.

Education in England is pathetic but atleast Abdula Rashi Magonanamadabang Rasmanamanabibudash and his family get a house and regular income at the expense of the public purse.

Grammar has not been taught properly in British schools for many years. Abroad, children are taught grammar from an early age. When they learn foreign languages they can understand it much better because they already understand most of the grammar rules.

Primarily because they learn English as a foreign language rather than as a native tongue and from my experience of living in France they are actually taught the grammar rules of their native tongue. English generally is not taught in the same way in schools in the UK so us native speakers do not actually know how to speak our own tongue correctly. I learnt French while living in France and discovered that there are 7 past tenses in English which is 5 more than I realised! In the 4 years speaking French I learnt more about English grammar than I did in 12 years of British schools. That is a sad indictment of the state of British schools. Saying that I have American friends who understand split infinitives, conjugations and how and when to use a colon as they were taught English Grammar so it's not all lost. If you want to learn English properly either take a grammar class, Latin class or learn that foreign language you keep telling yourself you'll do.

People who are taught English as a foreign language are taught proper English grammar. It might be interesting to compare the thoughts of foreign language speakers: when you speak in your native tongue with an English person, does the English person speak with "perfect" grammar? Also: do children (of any nationality) get taught the grammar of their mother tongue nowadays? If a child learns its mother tongue along with the grammar of the language, it will probably be more aware of the grammar of foreign languages in future.
