Best Answer:
It generally means taking ownership of or showing great interest in something. Similar to marking your territory. PS. Please don't make the common mistake of thinking that this song is a love song. It is acutally about obsession and stalking. Great song, though!

Prospectors "stake a claim" when they put out markers to identify the claim they are working. Bad guys who disregard the claim markers are "claim jumpers."

Claim you stake is based on some old legal terms especially related to the expansion of the Western United States in the mid 1800's. When the government opened these new lands to settlers they offered them to "Stake a claim" for the land. The claim refers to your right to own the land, while the stake were usually wooden stakes (short posts or pegs) that the settler would use to mark their land with.
Hope this helps. I know there is a lot of English in this.

It's an old mining phrase that made it into regular use. When old gold miners staked their claims, it meant they marked out their piece of mining land as their own. Nowadays it means marking your territory in a much broader sense.

It can mean a couple of things in this regard. However I'm going with Everything you own/buy/acquire etc.
Some other thoughts...
Since it follows "every smile you fake" it could mean "Everything you claim (or you say) to be true"
It can also mean everything that you claim to be yours as in claiming personal property or land
Breaking it down word by word Claim means to express ownership in something or a knowledge of something
Stake has many viable definitions:
* personal or emotional concern, interest, involvement, or share
* to risk (something),
* to mark with or as if with stakes *to possess, claim, or reserve a share of (land, profit, glory, etc.) as if by marking or bounding with stakes ((Most Likely Intended Use))
