GRE/GPA/etc for getting into good English grad program?

Robert L - 2009-04-14 13:31:37 - Higher Education (University +)

I'm wondering how I'll fair when applying to top English graduate programs. My creds are as follows: 1410 GRE (710v, 700q, 6 writing) 3.96 GPA Good Letters of Rec on the table Honors undergraduate thesis published Employment at University Writing Center Membership of a couple national honor socieities A few essay awards Dean's list many times So what are my chances of getting into top English grad programs; at what schools should I be looking to apply?

Best Answer:

Not to be snippy (really) but ... "how I'll fair" -2 -> "how I'll fare" Be very careful proof-reading applications and essays ... things like this will cause an English prof to trash your application. Creds look good. Get advice from profs (start with the ones that wrote recommendations), not strangers on Yahoo. General grad school advice ... 'Where' is less important than 'Who.' You will be the virtual slave of your grad advisor(s). Find people you want to work with and who will help you advance. Pick a special area of interest beyond "Grad School." Current Profs should provide info and introductions. Grad School is more of an apprenticeship than a regular classroom experience. 'Where' and 'Who' will both depend on 'What' it is that you want to be doing in 10 years. Best of luck
