What is the English pronunciation of "controversy"?

Asquith - 2009-02-22 07:19:40 - Words Wordplay

The phrase controversy has created quite a deal of trouble (aren't synonyms brilliant?) for me recently. The issue is what is the correct pronunciation of the term controversy. Is there meant to be the emphasis on the "ver" section of the word? I understand different countries have different pronunciations, for example the term lieutenant, but if someone could give me the correct English pronuncation I'd be much obliged, cheers.

Best Answer:

In the USA it's said "con-tro-ver-see" In the UK it's said "cun-trev-er-see"

It depends, but I think with the emphasis on the "con" rather that on the "ver", whereas, with "controversial" I think the emphasis is on the "ver"
