How to improve English pronunciation?

OhioKid - 2009-01-07 20:06:20 - Languages

Suppose you grew up and were taught to speak English by your parents who have a foreign accent. Now if you want to improve your English pronunciation, would it better to speak to your parents in English or in their language? If you speak in the other language, you're getting less practice with English. However, if you do speak English, you'll be hearing (from your parents) English without proper pronunciation anyway.

Best Answer:

You just have to listen to proper english really, and model your speech after it. Every language has it's own distinctive sounds in certain words and letters, so recognize those and change them if you want. Why get rid of an accent though? Accents are lovely.

Im a foreigner and my parents and I speak Russian at home. Of course I had an accent when I first moved, but gradually I made friends at school/work and started talking alot! This all happend in the course of 6 or 7 months. So I would continue speaking a foreign language at home and start using English more outside of the house.

Watch as many English movies as you can, listen to English songs, and just recordings in general. If you have some favorites, sing along with them. This is called immersion, where you just immerse yourself in the language. Two processes will occur: long-term, in which you subconsciously pick up on patterns of pronunciation, and short-term, where you actually listen carefully and try your best to copy the accent.

The best way is to choose the accent you wish to have (if you need one kind of accent and pronunciation, at least take one you like.) I prefer British accent and writing far from american one. But, any way, listen to english and oyu'll get it the way it has too. The better is Britain since it's the less changed version of the original, so if you really need the right pronounciation, listen to BBC, there Magicians on Youtube that are British and so on. Also, right now it's amazingly annoying to write here since it has american spelling. Always write colour, behaviour, etc. and always tend to use alternative British verb ending instead of putting -ed.
