How do you know if you got an academic scholarship to college?

O.K so i am a freshman in high school and i am trying to figure this scholarship thing out for college. So my question do you have to apply for a scholarship at that school or when you get your letter of acceptance do they say: we will give you this much money if you go here. I'm a little confused, how do you know if you get any money to go there?
