What is the best program to buy for my friend to learn english?

my friend just moved to America from Jordan about 2 month's ago he is finding it extremely difficult to learn English, and is thinking about giving up and moving back to Jordan. he wants to learn English so he can attend an American university. okay i think some people got Jordan confused with an hispanic speaking country. Jordan's national language is arabic so he needs to learn english. anything free out their he can use?

Rosetta stone. Its expensive but they guarantee that it works. So thats kinda comforting.

he should read books not television... (if he only learns to listen, but not read what good will that be?) if he can atleast read... then proceed with TV programs with a nice clear sounds, voices, conversations, etc...

Have him watch T.V ( kids shows if need be) the kids shows on Nick in the morning, are made for younger kids. They are set up as learning shows, that they might help. Or go to your local library and check out kids books that are easy to read and lean from, they may have learning tapes there too. Tell him Rome wasn't built in a day and given time he will get it down. best of luck
