How long does it take to learn to understand 14,000 English words?

If a Chinese speaking foreigner spends 1 hour a day learning English, how long, you think, does it take him or her to learn to understand 14,000 English words?

Best Answer:

I stick to my estimate in the other question for the same reasons. 7 to 9 years everyday for full comprehension. Many people who got through the public school system would probably still not be able to read a paper. See George Bush for example. Sorry I couldnt resist!

well i figured that you could at most do 70 words a day and then: 14000/70= 200 (200 days) BUT that is never really necessary! what you need to do is get a good acquaintance with english GRAMMAR and PHRASES! just studying words is not necessarily at all what you need, most english/ american people you meet on the street don't even know that many words. think about it.

Does the amount of time it takes to learn Chinese or English words, or how many words it takes to read a Chinese/English newspaper really have anything to do with Taiwan? This is a question for the (Society Culture) Langauges category.
